This website, The Trade-off Log (enginoren.com), is the personal blog of Engin Oren, who is the data controller for the personal data described here. This Privacy Policy explains what data is collected when you visit the site, why it is collected, how long it is kept and what rights you have.
Contact form
The name, e-mail address, subject and message you submit, together with the IP address of the request. The form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which processes limited technical data to tell humans from bots.
Usage data
Anonymised analytics such as the pages visited, the referring site, browser and device type and approximate location (country or city). This data is aggregated and cannot be used to identify you.
Server logs
The hosting infrastructure records IP addresses, timestamps and requested addresses for security and troubleshooting.
To reply to you
Contact form data is used only to answer your message. The legal basis is your request to be contacted.
To improve the content
Usage data shows which essays are read and how the site performs. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in running a useful site.
To keep the site secure
Logs and reCAPTCHA help prevent abuse and spam. The legal basis is legitimate interest.
The site is operated with a hosting provider and, for the contact form, Google reCAPTCHA; the analytics service receives only anonymised usage data. These providers process data on my behalf and under their own privacy terms. Your data is never sold, and no advertising networks are used on this site.
Contact messages are kept while a conversation is ongoing and deleted within twelve months after it ends, or earlier on request. Server logs are kept for a short, fixed period. Analytics data is stored only in aggregated form.
You may ask which data about you is held, request its correction or deletion, object to its processing or ask for a copy of it. Send your request through the contact page; it will be answered within the statutory period. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the data protection authority in your country.
The site links to LinkedIn and GitHub. Those services have their own privacy policies, which apply once you leave this site.
This policy may be updated from time to time. The current version is always published on this page.
